In 2022, the amount of coniferous wood in the rough exported in Africa soared to X cubic meters, rising by 19% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the coniferous wood in rough exports reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the main exporter of coniferous wood in the rough in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X cubic meters, which was near 49% of total exports in 2022. Mozambique (X cubic meters) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Congo (9.5%) and Zimbabwe (5.1%). Swaziland (X cubic meters), Togo (X cubic meters), Benin (X cubic meters), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters) and Tanzania (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous wood in the rough exports from Madagascar stood at +39.3%. At the same time, Benin (+42.2%), Swaziland (+29.2%), Togo (+18.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.9%), Tanzania (+13.3%) and Mozambique (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Congo (-4.3%) and Zimbabwe (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+47 p.p.), Mozambique (+7.9 p.p.), Swaziland (+3.2 p.p.), Benin (+2.2 p.p.), Togo (+2.2 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Congo (-1.6 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest coniferous wood in the rough supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Congo, with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Madagascar stood at +59.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+20.4% per year) and Congo (-12.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, waning by -21.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 80%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+15.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Coniferous Wood In The Rough
Imports in Africa
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of coniferous wood in the rough, when their volume decreased by -3.2% to X cubic meters. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +81.5% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, coniferous wood in rough imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Egypt represented the key importing country with an import of around X cubic meters, which resulted at 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X cubic meters), mixing up a 17% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X cubic meters) and Libya (X cubic meters) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous wood in the rough imports into Egypt stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Algeria (+34.0%) and Morocco (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Libya (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt and Algeria increased by +25 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coniferous wood in the rough in Africa, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 0.9% share.
In Egypt, coniferous wood in the rough imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-1.5% per year) and Libya (-14.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per cubic meter), while Algeria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
