The African contact lense market fell to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, contact lense production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 78%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

Contact lense exports expanded rapidly to X units in 2022, increasing by 14% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 69,706% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, contact lense exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 38%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of contact lenses in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Ghana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Swaziland (X units). All these countries together held near 35% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+145.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +145.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+42 p.p.) and Swaziland (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest contact lense supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+149.3% per year) and Ghana (-8.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 38,090% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X units of contact lenses were imported in Africa; picking up by 7.9% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, contact lense imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 56% of total imports. Egypt (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Morocco (8.1%) and Libya (5.9%). Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Nigeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+80.4%), Egypt (+24.1%), Algeria (+11.1%), Morocco (+6.0%) and Libya (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +80.4% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Egypt (+13 p.p.), Morocco (+3.8 p.p.), Libya (+2.8 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -26.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported contact lenses in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7.8% share.

In South Africa, contact lense imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-2.4% per year) and Morocco (+2.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
