The African totaliser market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, growing by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a notable expansion. In 2021, approx. X units of continuous and discontinuous totalisers were exported in Africa; surging by 12% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 716% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 124%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X units) and Morocco (X units) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units), together generating an 11% share of total exports. Central African Republic (X units), Egypt (X units) and Tanzania (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +67.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest totaliser supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Central African Republic ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 4.4% share.

In South Africa, totaliser exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Central African Republic (0.0% per year) and Swaziland (+87.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -23.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 1,746% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Central African Republic ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+22.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Totaliser imports soared to X units in 2021, surging by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 191% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 100%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 66% of total imports. Nigeria (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X units). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - each reached a 3.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to totaliser imports into South Africa stood at -6.9%. At the same time, Nigeria (+67.6%) and Mozambique (+45.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +67.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.2%) and Botswana (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-1.6 p.p.), Botswana (-5.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-12.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported continuous and discontinuous totalisers in Africa, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 3.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3% share.

In Nigeria, totaliser imports increased at an average annual rate of +65.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-10.6% per year) and Egypt (-7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -73.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 603% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
