Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporter of copper bars, rods and profiles in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. Cameroon (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Tanzania (9.5%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper bar, rod and profile exports from South Africa stood at -5.2%. At the same time, Cameroon (+63.1%), Morocco (+39.9%) and Tanzania (+34.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cameroon (+14 p.p.), Tanzania (+9.2 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.9% and -19.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest copper bar, rod and profile supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -3.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+56.7% per year) and Cameroon (+30.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Copper bar, rod and profile imports rose rapidly to X tons in 2022, picking up by 5.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 236% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importers of copper bars, rods and profiles, together comprising 74% of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +38.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total imports. South Africa, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Swaziland and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +33.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
