Copper Powder Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African copper powder market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper powder production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable downturn. In 2021, overseas shipments of copper powders and flakes decreased by -35% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports faced a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 38%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper powder exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of copper powders and flakes, achieving 63% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper powder exports from South Africa stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Nigeria (+24.1%), Zambia (+5.2%) and Egypt (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-30.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-39.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+59 p.p.), Zambia (+11 p.p.), Nigeria (+8.8 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia and Democratic Republic of the Congo saw its share reduced by -11.9% and -69.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest copper powder supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 6.6% share.

In South Africa, copper powder exports increased at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-40.3% per year) and Tunisia (-30.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Copper powder imports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 20% against the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper powder imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 80%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zambia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 63% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Libya (9.9%) and Morocco (6.9%). South Africa (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper powder imports into Zambia stood at -13.6%. At the same time, Libya (+20.1%) and Morocco (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+9.2 p.p.), Egypt (+6.9 p.p.) and Morocco (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zambia (-25.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper powders and flakes in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 10% share.

In Zambia, copper powder imports plunged by an average annual rate of -15.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+0.2% per year) and Morocco (+12.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
