Cottonseed Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African cottonseed market increased by 6% to $X, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Cottonseed Production in Africa

In value terms, cottonseed production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 11%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Benin (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together comprising 41% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cottonseed Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of cottonseed, when their volume increased by 237% to X tons. In general, exports posted a modest increase. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cottonseed exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), mixing up a 6.2% share of total exports. Malawi (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cottonseed exports, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mozambique (-5.6%), Malawi (-15.3%) and Zambia (-23.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Benin and Togo increased by +81 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Benin ($X) remains the largest cottonseed supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Benin stood at +38.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+4.1% per year) and Malawi (-0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of cottonseed imported in Africa surged to X tons, rising by 342% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded buoyant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cottonseed imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. Mali (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cottonseed imports, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Burkina Faso increased by +62 percentage points.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Mali ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -77.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
