The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, couscous exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +74.3% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), mixing up a 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.1% share of total exports.
Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+22.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+26 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Algeria (-1.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (-24.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest couscous supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 2.5% share.
In Morocco, couscous exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-3.0% per year) and South Africa (+12.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 22%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of couscous were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, couscous imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Togo (X tons), Libya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Benin (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of couscous, together constituting 87% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Libya ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 51% of total imports. These countries were followed by Togo, South Africa, Benin and Gambia, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +36.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
