The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 290%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Madagascar was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 66% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (6.5%). Malawi (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of +35.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+46.0%), Uganda (+22.9%), Mozambique (+22.4%), Malawi (+21.5%), South Africa (+17.8%) and Kenya (+13.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar increased by +37 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest cow peas supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Madagascar totaled +35.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+22.9% per year) and Mozambique (+20.3% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -13.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of cow peas (dry) increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, cow peas imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 69%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and South Sudan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total imports. South Africa, Algeria and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.7%.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +131.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Algeria ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and South Sudan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
