Truck Crane Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African truck crane market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of truck cranes increased by 31% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, truck crane exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of truck cranes, generating 25% of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Congo (X units), Nigeria (X units), Algeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X units), Morocco (X units), Zambia (X units), Ghana (X units), Tunisia (X units), Kenya (X units) and Gabon (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to truck crane exports from South Africa stood at -21.0%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+34.2%), Congo (+32.1%), Zambia (+30.7%), Nigeria (+16.7%), Gabon (+15.5%), Kenya (+14.2%), Ethiopia (+12.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.1%), Tunisia (+6.3%), Morocco (+5.3%) and Ghana (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Algeria (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.8 p.p.), Congo (+6.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.9 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.5 p.p.), Ethiopia (+3.7 p.p.), Algeria (+3.6 p.p.), Zambia (+3.6 p.p.), Morocco (+3.1 p.p.), Ghana (+2.8 p.p.), Kenya (+2.4 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.1 p.p.) and Gabon (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-49.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 46% of total exports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +43.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, almost unchanged from the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, truck crane export price increased by +5.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gabon ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

Truck crane imports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, growing by 17% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 24% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Algeria (X units), Guinea (X units), Ghana (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units), together committing a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Morocco (X units), Nigeria (X units), Tanzania (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the truck cranes imports, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+17.1%), Senegal (+13.6%), Mali (+12.8%), Guinea (+8.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.3%), Tanzania (+2.7%) and Ghana (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Morocco (-2.1%), Burkina Faso (-4.3%), South Africa (-5.4%), Nigeria (-13.4%) and Algeria (-14.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Ghana and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +19, +4.1, +4, +2.9, +2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 48% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
