The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Mayotte (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +32.3%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+34.7%), Djibouti (+30.0%), Togo (+24.4%), Mozambique (+23.7%), Libya (+7.5%), Morocco (+5.0%) and Mayotte (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.7% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-2.0%), South Africa (-5.0%), Mauritius (-11.3%) and Botswana (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+18 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+7.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.6 p.p.), Djibouti (+2.8 p.p.), Togo (+2.2 p.p.) and Libya (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-3.1 p.p.), South Africa (-8.3 p.p.), Mauritius (-9.6 p.p.) and Botswana (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest crispbread, rusk and toasted bread importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 38% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +27.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 9.2% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
