Crispbread Market Size in Africa

The African crispbread market expanded to $X in 2021, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of crispbread, which decreased by -9.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of crispbread, committing 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +91.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +82.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, crispbread export price increased by +85.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of crispbread increased by 67% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crispbread imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), mixing up an 11% share of total imports. South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to crispbread imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +75.4%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+272.0%), Togo (+37.1%) and Nigeria (+31.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +272.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.0%), Namibia (-6.7%), South Africa (-9.2%), Mozambique (-11.1%) and Botswana (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+59 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+11 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-5.8 p.p.), Namibia (-8.8 p.p.), Mozambique (-11.3 p.p.), South Africa (-16.5 p.p.) and Botswana (-17.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crispbread in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +71.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-1.0% per year) and Namibia (-9.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
