In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 51% of total exports. Mauritania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of carnallite, sylvite and other crude natural potassium salts, potassium magnesium sulphate and mixtures of potassic fertilisers expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year.
