Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total exports in 2021. Libya (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Egypt (6.1%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +41.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest raw steel and steel semi-finished products supplier in Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Libya, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +5.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (+28.6% per year) and Libya (+0.8% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products in Africa shrank to X tons, waning by -13.8% on 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Morocco (X tons), distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importers of raw steel and steel semi-finished products, together committing 78% of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +47.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest raw steel and steel semi-finished products importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Djibouti, Cameroon, Egypt, Libya and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +44.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
