In 2022, shipments abroad of crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil increased by 52% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a slight decline. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporter of crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took near 43% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports from South Africa stood at +7.0%. At the same time, Uganda (+12.6%) and Mozambique (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-6.8%), Tanzania (-12.0%) and Egypt (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+38 p.p.), Uganda (+12 p.p.) and Mozambique (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-8 p.p.) and Egypt (-43.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +15.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+17.1% per year) and Egypt (-17.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 41% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil export price increased by +123.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented roughly 70% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together committing a 12% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +70.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Sudan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 72% of total imports. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Among the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +68.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
