After six years of growth, the African cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes market decreased by -2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, approx. X tons of cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes (excluding cyclohexane) were exported in Africa; shrinking by -2.5% on the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 160%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 46% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (17%), Kenya (6%) and Tunisia (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +36.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes supplying countries in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports. These countries were followed by Tunisia and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 2.9%.

Among the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +37.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 111% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes (excluding cyclohexane), when their volume increased by 35% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the key importer of cyclanes, cyclenes and cycloterpenes (excluding cyclohexane), comprising 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together creating a 40% share of total imports. Togo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +18.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 87% of total imports.

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in South Africa ($X per ton) and Togo ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
