The total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. Calendering cylinder exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, jumping by 51% against the previous year. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +83.3% against 2018 indices. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calendering cylinder exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of cylinders for calendering, committing 50% of total exports. Egypt (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Tunisia (17%) and Zambia (8.1%). Nigeria (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calendering cylinder exports from South Africa stood at +9.9%. At the same time, Nigeria (+51.8%), Tunisia (+25.8%), Egypt (+13.9%) and Zambia (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt, Zambia and Nigeria increased by +21, +14, +11, +2.9 and +2.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest calendering cylinder supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+22.1% per year) and Egypt (+14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of cylinders for calendering in Africa dropped markedly to X units, waning by -19.8% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -40.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calendering cylinder imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 36% of total imports. Algeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.6% share, followed by Tunisia (9.4%), South Africa (9.1%), Zambia (6.7%) and Tanzania (5.1%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Egypt (X units), Namibia (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cylinders for calendering imports, with a CAGR of +54.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+25.3%), Algeria (+14.6%), South Africa (+5.3%), Tunisia (+5.1%), Ethiopia (+3.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.4%), Egypt (-6.1%), Zambia (-7.1%) and Namibia (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+35 p.p.) and Algeria (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania, Egypt, Zambia and Namibia saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -4.7%, -11.2% and -14.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 43% share of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +44.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
