From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Benin (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Uganda (X tons), together comprising 99% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter and dairy spreads exports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -16.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 27%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporter of butter and dairy spreads in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising an 18% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Benin (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+50.9%), Uganda (+19.9%), Kenya (+13.9%), Tunisia (+8.0%) and Namibia (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-2.4%), Ghana (-2.8%) and Benin (-24.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uganda (+9.4 p.p.), Egypt (+3.5 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.4 p.p.), Kenya (+2 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Benin and South Africa saw its share reduced by -11.1% and -13.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest butter and dairy spreads supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (+30.5% per year) and Egypt (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of butter and dairy spreads were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -5.4% compared with 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the largest importers of butter and dairy spreads in Africa, together mixing up 54% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Burkina Faso (5.6%). Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +39.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 70% share of total imports. Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Namibia, Burkina Faso and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
