In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +100.9% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of unroasted decaffeinated coffee exported in Africa fell to X tons, with a decrease of -12% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 32%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), making up a 5.6% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Burundi (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unroasted decaffeinated coffee supplying countries in Africa were Ethiopia ($X), Uganda ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +4.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 6.4%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of unroasted decaffeinated coffee in Africa expanded slightly to X tons, with an increase of 3.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 55%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sudan (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the major importers of unroasted decaffeinated coffee, together committing 53% of total imports. The following importers - Gambia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Comoros (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 27% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports into Sudan stood at +21.0%. At the same time, Benin (+36.2%), Senegal (+27.3%), Nigeria (+14.0%), Comoros (+11.8%), Mali (+7.6%) and Swaziland (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.2% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-3.4%), Botswana (-10.0%), Namibia (-13.7%), Gambia (-16.6%) and South Africa (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sudan (+22 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.2 p.p.), Benin (+3 p.p.), Comoros (+2.9 p.p.), Senegal (+2.4 p.p.), Swaziland (+2.2 p.p.), Mali (+2.2 p.p.) and Algeria (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana, Gambia, Namibia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -6.9%, -8.2% and -23.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 45% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +31.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
