After two years of growth, the African degras market decreased by -12.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Degras Production in Africa
In value terms, degras production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of degras exported in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 31% on the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 110%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, degras exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a tangible expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Tunisia (12%) and South Africa (6.2%). Togo (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +66.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest degras supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 13% share.
In Ghana, degras exports increased at an average annual rate of +59.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+38.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-6.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 320% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+24.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Degras Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of degras in Africa soared to X tons, with an increase of 117% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, degras imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a mild increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Mali (X tons) was the key importer of degras, achieving 43% of total imports. Djibouti (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons) and Sudan (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. Malawi (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +147.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest degras importing markets in Africa were Mali ($X), Djibouti ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for 78% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Sudan, with a CAGR of +106.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, degras import price increased by +42.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
