All these countries together held approx. 9.9% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+190.9%), Uganda (+57.8%) and Swaziland (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +190.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sudan (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Sudan, Egypt and Uganda increased by +11, +5, +4.9 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest denatured ethyl alcohol supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+188.9% per year) and Sudan (-15.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits, when their volume decreased by -31.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol imports declined to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +126.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Nigeria was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total imports. Rwanda (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to denatured ethyl alcohol imports into Nigeria stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Rwanda (+54.0%), Burkina Faso (+30.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+22.1%), Egypt (+19.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+15.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Rwanda and Burkina Faso increased by +7.7, +3.3 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits in Africa, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+11.3% per year) and Rwanda (+53.9% per year).
