Crane Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African crane market increased by 2.7% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Crane Production in Africa

In value terms, crane production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 38%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane decreased by -4.4% to X units, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 43%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crane exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 52%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 28% of total exports. Morocco (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Rwanda (X units), Algeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units) and Benin (X units). All these countries together held near 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Cameroon (X units), Nigeria (X units), Togo (X units), Niger (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 15% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+60.2%), Benin (+25.1%), Nigeria (+18.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+16.7%), Cameroon (+13.5%), Ghana (+11.9%), Senegal (+9.3%), Niger (+7.3%), Togo (+4.9%) and Morocco (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-9.9%) and Botswana (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+6 p.p.), Morocco (+4.5 p.p.), Benin (+4.3 p.p.), Ghana (+4 p.p.), Senegal (+3.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3 p.p.), Cameroon (+2.4 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Botswana (-2.7 p.p.) and Algeria (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest crane supplier in Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 5.4% share.

In South Africa, crane exports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+12.3% per year) and Senegal (+14.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 8.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 40%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane imported in Africa totaled X units, growing by 4.8% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crane imports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Egypt (X units), Morocco (X units), South Africa (X units), Algeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Kenya (X units) represented the major importers of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane, together committing 62% of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Somalia (X units), Ghana (X units), Cameroon (X units) and Ethiopia (X units) - together made up 14% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Somalia (+60.1%), Senegal (+18.8%), Tanzania (+18.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.2%), Kenya (+8.0%) and Cameroon (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Somalia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-2.5%), Ghana (-5.2%), Ethiopia (-5.6%), Morocco (-6.9%), Algeria (-9.8%) and South Africa (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+9.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.8 p.p.), Somalia (+3.3 p.p.), Senegal (+3.2 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, Algeria and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.6%, -7.2% and -15.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane in Africa, comprising 18% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+15.6% per year) and South Africa (-11.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 9.2%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
