Desktop Computer Market Size in Africa

The African desktop computer market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, desktop computer production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X units of desktop computers were exported in Africa; remaining stable against 2020. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, desktop computer exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 72% of total exports in 2021. Uganda (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.2% share, followed by Kenya (6.7%). Tunisia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+6.4%) and Tunisia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uganda and Tunisia increased by +5.5 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest desktop computer supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 1.6% share.

In South Africa, desktop computer exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+5.3% per year) and Uganda (+0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Uganda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X units of desktop computers were imported in Africa; growing by 21% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, desktop computer imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Morocco (X units), distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units) and Libya (X units) were the major importers of desktop computers, together generating 55% of total imports. The following importers - Cameroon (X units), Algeria (X units), Tunisia (X units), Angola (X units), Swaziland (X units), Kenya (X units), Cabo Verde (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - together made up 26% of total imports.

Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of desktop computers. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+12.7%), Angola (+6.9%), South Africa (+4.4%), Libya (+2.9%) and Cameroon (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-1.1%), Zimbabwe (-2.6%), Mozambique (-7.3%), Algeria (-8.6%), Tunisia (-9.8%), Egypt (-12.7%) and Swaziland (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+7.4 p.p.), South Africa (+6.1 p.p.), Libya (+3.5 p.p.), Angola (+2.2 p.p.), Cameroon (+1.7 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria, Tunisia, Swaziland and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2%, -2.6%, -6.9% and -14.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Cameroon, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Cabo Verde and Swaziland, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +4.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, desktop computer import price increased by +87.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
