The African modified starches market totaled $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of dextrins and other modified starches exported in Africa declined to X tons, falling by -6.5% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to modified starches exports from South Africa stood at +5.7%. At the same time, Egypt (+57.3%) and Kenya (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +57.3% from 2012-2022. In South Africa, modified starches exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+11.8% per year) and Egypt (+59.0% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of dextrins and other modified starches imported in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 23% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, modified starches imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +103.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the largest importers of dextrins and other modified starches in 2022, amounting to near 29% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Nigeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Morocco (8.9%), Tunisia (7.7%), Egypt (6.4%) and Niger (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +57.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest modified starches importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports. Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
