In value terms, diethanolamine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 333%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, Kenya ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Tanzania and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
Among the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +38.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, diethanolamine imports in Africa reduced to X tons, waning by -6.7% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, diethanolamine imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of diethanolamine and its salts, mixing up 67% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diethanolamine imports into South Africa stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Uganda (+38.4%) and Nigeria (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-2.9%) and Algeria (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+16 p.p.) and Uganda (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diethanolamine and its salts in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +1.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-1.8% per year) and Nigeria (+4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
