The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, direct dye exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, committing 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together mixing up a 43% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+44.1%), Kenya (+22.2%) and Namibia (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +44.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uganda (-4.6%), Egypt (-6.5%) and Tunisia (-20.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+13 p.p.), Kenya (+7.3 p.p.), Togo (+5.6 p.p.), Namibia (+5.3 p.p.), Uganda (+4.6 p.p.) and Egypt (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -10.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest direct dye supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 9.6% share.
In South Africa, direct dye exports shrank by an average annual rate of -9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-6.8% per year) and Tunisia (-22.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of direct dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 101% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, direct dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together comprising 75% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total imports. Ethiopia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 80% of total imports.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +12.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
