Disperse Dye Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African disperse dye market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, disperse dye production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 26% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 265% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, disperse dye exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 108%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (8.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (6.5%) and Morocco (4.9%). Swaziland (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+13.8%), Swaziland (+3.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.8%) and Morocco (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+28 p.p.) and Kenya (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-11.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest disperse dye supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 7.1% share.

In South Africa, disperse dye exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+13.4% per year) and Swaziland (+0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon in Africa dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, disperse dye imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt represented the key importer of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 33% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ethiopia (9.9%) and Nigeria (6.6%). The following importers - Djibouti (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Libya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.

Imports into Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+17.7%), Djibouti (+16.8%), Tanzania (+9.8%), Morocco (+9.0%) and Nigeria (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Libya (-2.4%), Kenya (-3.7%), Algeria (-6.4%), Mauritius (-8.1%), South Africa (-8.2%) and Tunisia (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+10 p.p.), Ethiopia (+8.3 p.p.), Djibouti (+3.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-8.5 p.p.) and Egypt (-12.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported disperse dyes and preparations based thereon in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +5.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+10.0% per year) and Ethiopia (+21.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, disperse dye import price increased by +98.7% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
