The African plastic tableware and kitchenware market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -6.6% against the previous year. After three years of decline, shipments abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware increased by 28% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of plastic tableware and kitchenware, making up 42% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kenya (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 83% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.2%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

Plastic tableware and kitchenware imports shrank to X tons in 2022, waning by -12.9% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Libya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the major importers of plastic tableware and kitchenware, together constituting 33% of total imports. The following importers - Morocco (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - together made up 30% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic tableware and kitchenware imports into Ghana stood at +11.2%. At the same time, Guinea (+15.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.6%), Sudan (+15.5%), Burkina Faso (+12.8%), Cameroon (+11.1%), Senegal (+9.4%), Botswana (+8.9%), Morocco (+3.9%) and Algeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Libya (-1.6%), Angola (-4.5%) and South Africa (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+8.7 p.p.), Sudan (+2.8 p.p.), Senegal (+2.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.3 p.p.), Guinea (+1.8 p.p.) and Cameroon (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Libya (-3 p.p.), Angola (-3.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), South Africa ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 31% of total imports. Libya, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Algeria, Sudan, Cameroon, Guinea, Botswana and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +22.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
