The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +54.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dog and cat food imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the main importers of dog and cat food in Africa, together resulting at near 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest dog and cat food importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Angola, Mauritius, Lesotho, Botswana, Algeria, Nigeria, Libya, Tunisia and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Libya, with a CAGR of +33.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
