The African dolomite market reached $X in 2021, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of chalk and dolomite, which increased by 114% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, dolomite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), comprising a 9.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dolomite exports from Burkina Faso stood at +30.8%. At the same time, Tunisia (+38.9%), Egypt (+29.2%) and Namibia (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Burkina Faso (+33 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dolomite supplying countries in Africa were Namibia ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 84% of total exports.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +35.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -35% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 6.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Dolomite Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of chalk and dolomite decreased by -21.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, dolomite imports reached $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 45% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. Gabon (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Congo (+69.7%), Gabon (+34.8%), Nigeria (+33.0%), Egypt (+26.8%), Algeria (+7.9%), South Africa (+6.4%), Senegal (+6.1%), Morocco (+5.1%) and Tunisia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2021. Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Cote d'Ivoire (+19 p.p.), Egypt (+3.9 p.p.), Gabon (+3.9 p.p.), Congo (+2.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cameroon and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -3.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chalk and dolomite in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 9.4% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, dolomite imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+8.9% per year) and Senegal (+4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
