Dolomite Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African dolomite market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -20.5% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -23.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of dolomite exported in Africa surged to X tons, rising by 109% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, dolomite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), committing a 9.6% share of total exports.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dolomite exports, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Burkina Faso (+23 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-19.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest dolomite supplying countries in Africa were Namibia ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X).

Among the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -37.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-2.2%).

Dolomite Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of dolomite in Africa rose significantly to X tons, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dolomite imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the major importer of dolomite in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 42% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Gabon (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising a 49% share of total imports. Congo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dolomite imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Congo (+123.9%), Gabon (+48.9%), Egypt (+29.1%), South Africa (+21.6%), Tunisia (+13.9%) and Algeria (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +123.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+16 p.p.), Gabon (+6.4 p.p.), South Africa (+3.9 p.p.), Egypt (+3.9 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.6 p.p.), Congo (+2.8 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dolomite in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.7% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, dolomite imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+8.4% per year) and Egypt (+18.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -21.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (-3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
