In 2022, overseas purchases of domestic food grinders and mixers and fruit or vegetable juice extractors decreased by -21.4% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, food mixer imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Algeria represented the key importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 30% of total imports. Ghana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X units), Libya (X units), Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units) and Sudan (X units). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X units), Djibouti (X units), Somalia (X units), Egypt (X units), Cameroon (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to food mixer imports into Algeria stood at +16.9%. At the same time, Somalia (+46.7%), Cameroon (+27.7%), Kenya (+23.8%), Sudan (+23.7%), Ghana (+16.4%), Djibouti (+14.5%), Tunisia (+7.0%), Morocco (+4.2%) and South Africa (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Somalia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012-2022. Libya and Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia and Cameroon increased by +16, +5.5, +3.6, +3.3, +2.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 46% share of total imports. Ghana, Libya, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Sudan, Tunisia, Djibouti, Somalia and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Somalia, with a CAGR of +44.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
