In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in the African market for drawn glass and blown glass, when its value increased by 13% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X square meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 302%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana prevails in exports structure, accounting for X square meters, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X square meters), making up a 7.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters) and Egypt (X square meters) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawn glass and blown glass exports from Ghana stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Rwanda (+72.3%) and Nigeria (+35.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-7.5%) and Egypt (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+79 p.p.), Rwanda (+7.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-20.7 p.p.) and Egypt (-33.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the largest drawn glass and blown glass supplier in Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.

In Rwanda, drawn glass and blown glass exports expanded at an average annual rate of +155.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+41.2% per year) and Egypt (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2021, with a decrease of -72.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 554%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per square meter), while Ghana (less than $X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+48.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of drawn glass and blown glass increased by 92% to X square meters, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 469%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Tanzania represented the main importer of drawn glass and blown glass in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X square meters, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. Rwanda (X square meters) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (4.5%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters), Kenya (X square meters), Uganda (X square meters), Mali (X square meters), Ghana (X square meters) and Liberia (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +86.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Egypt ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Uganda, Kenya and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +48.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, falling by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 76% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
