Powdered Milk Market Size in Africa

The African powdered milk market stood at $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, powdered milk production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 7.4%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together accounting for 70% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of powdered milk, which decreased by -2.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, powdered milk exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of powdered milk in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Uganda (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (8.8%) and Ghana (5.3%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +35.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Uganda ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Egypt, Senegal, Rwanda and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +50.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of powdered milk imported in Africa was estimated at X tons, remaining constant against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, powdered milk imports rose to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Algeria represented the major importer of powdered milk in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Somalia (X tons), together mixing up a 21% share of total imports. Libya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to powdered milk imports into Algeria stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Morocco (+18.1%), Somalia (+9.3%), Ghana (+7.3%), Cameroon (+4.5%), Libya (+2.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. Nigeria and Sudan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria, Somalia and Morocco increased by +9.7, +2.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported powdered milk in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Algeria totaled +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+1.0% per year) and Egypt (+0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Nigeria ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) and Sudan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
