For the fourth consecutive year, the African dried or salted fish market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -7.2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Production of Dried Or Salted Fish in Africa

In value terms, dried or salted fish production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of dried or salted fish decreased by -14.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, dried or salted fish exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 52% of total exports. Uganda (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (12%). The following exporters - Senegal (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried or salted fish exports from Tanzania stood at +2.0%. At the same time, Morocco (+14.9%), Uganda (+11.3%) and Kenya (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-4.3%) and Mauritania (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uganda, Tanzania and Morocco increased by +15, +9.4 and +8.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dried or salted fish supplying countries in Africa were Tanzania ($X), Morocco ($X) and Uganda ($X), together comprising 81% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +15.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Dried Or Salted Fish

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of dried or salted fish imported in Africa contracted significantly to X tons, waning by -39.3% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried or salted fish imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Rwanda was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Togo (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Congo (X tons), together committing a 37% share of total imports. Uganda (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Burundi (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried or salted fish imports into Rwanda stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Uganda (+22.4%), Gabon (+9.5%), South Africa (+5.3%) and Burundi (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-2.0%), Morocco (-10.3%), Zimbabwe (-10.7%), Congo (-15.7%), Angola (-18.0%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-24.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+29 p.p.), Tunisia (+7.1 p.p.), Togo (+4.1 p.p.), Uganda (+3.4 p.p.), South Africa (+2.6 p.p.) and Gabon (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-3.1 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 50% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Congo, Gabon, Burundi, Morocco, South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Togo, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +22.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
