In value terms, dried or smoked fish production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of dried or smoked fish increased by 0.7% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -36.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 64%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania represented the key exporter of dried or smoked fish in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - Namibia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried or smoked fish exports from Tanzania stood at +19.4%. At the same time, Botswana (+111.3%), Ghana (+28.6%), Morocco (+14.5%) and Guinea (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +111.3% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.8%), South Africa (-7.5%), Namibia (-11.8%) and Uganda (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+31 p.p.), Morocco (+13 p.p.), Botswana (+4.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Uganda (-10 p.p.), Namibia (-10.3 p.p.) and South Africa (-10.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total exports. South Africa, Tunisia, Namibia, Ghana, Botswana, Senegal and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +115.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+26.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Dried Or Smoked Fish

Imports in Africa

Dried or smoked fish imports contracted to X tons in 2021, declining by -3.8% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importer of dried or smoked fish in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 36% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Congo (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons), together generating a 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Uganda (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total imports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of dried or smoked fish. At the same time, Uganda (+32.4%), Congo (+8.6%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.5%), Rwanda (-1.6%) and Burkina Faso (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Congo (+6.6 p.p.), Uganda (+3.5 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Burkina Faso (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried or smoked fish in Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Congo ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.9% share.

In Nigeria, dried or smoked fish imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Congo (+8.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
