The African dried prune market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas shipments of dried prunes decreased by -28.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 120%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco was the key exporter of dried prunes in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 37% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.1%).

In 2022, the amount of dried prunes imported in Africa expanded modestly to X tons, with an increase of 4.8% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 139%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +108.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Algeria was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 64% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports.

Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of dried prunes. At the same time, South Africa (+7.5%) and Egypt (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +7.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Egypt (+6.2 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Algeria (-8.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dried prune import price increased by +40.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 38%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
