Pasta Products Market Size in Africa

The African pasta products market amounted to $X in 2022, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, pasta products production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products decreased by -70.8% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 44%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, pasta products exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons), distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Togo (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Niger (X tons) were the key exporters of dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products, together mixing up 84% of total exports. Benin (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +59.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pasta products supplying countries in Africa were Namibia ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +59.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 57% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products were imported in Africa; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -16.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pasta products imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X tons), distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), Niger (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented the major importers of dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products, together committing 67% of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Mali (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +42.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Togo ($X) and Niger ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 36% of total imports. Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Uganda, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Mozambique and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +32.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
