Dry Bean Market Size in Africa

The African dry bean market was estimated at $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Dry Bean Production in Africa

In value terms, dry bean production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 48% share of total production. Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Burundi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Mali and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burundi (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dry bean yield amounted to X kg per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the dry bean yield attained the peak level at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The dry bean harvested area reduced modestly to X ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 5.8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry bean production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of beans (dry) exported in Africa reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -7.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -3.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 55%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean exports declined to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from Egypt (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together recording 65% of total export. Madagascar (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total exports. Uganda (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Madagascar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 73% of total exports. Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry bean export price increased by +65.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of beans (dry) imported in Africa reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -4.2% against 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Angola (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the main importers of beans (dry), together comprising 71% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry bean imports into Algeria stood at +1.2%. At the same time, Uganda (+27.0%), Swaziland (+11.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.9%), Rwanda (+9.6%), Cabo Verde (+9.1%), Zimbabwe (+6.2%), Ghana (+5.9%) and Libya (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-9.4%), Angola (-10.9%), Kenya (-13.5%) and Egypt (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Libya increased by +9.7, +7.1, +5.5, +3, +2, +1.9, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beans (dry) in Africa, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Algeria was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-11.8% per year) and Angola (-11.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -11.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
