Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +26.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 54% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Zambia (9.5%), Namibia (7.5%) and Tanzania (7.2%). Togo (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+64.9%), Tanzania (+16.2%), Togo (+3.3%) and Namibia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +64.9% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+9.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.7%, -4.2% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest dry vegetable supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-1.0% per year) and Tanzania (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 15%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of dry vegetables in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Nigeria (9.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.7%). Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
