The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of dry vegetables were exported in Africa; rising by 12% on the year before. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +26.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dry vegetable exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Egypt represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 54% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Zambia (9.5%), Namibia (7.5%) and Tanzania (7.2%). Togo (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+64.9%), Tanzania (+16.2%), Togo (+3.3%) and Namibia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +64.9% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+9.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.7%, -4.2% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest dry vegetable supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-1.0% per year) and Tanzania (+9.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dry vegetable imports declined to X tons in 2022, approximately equating 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 15%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, dry vegetable imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the major importer of dry vegetables in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Nigeria (9.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.7%). Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry vegetable imports into South Africa stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Senegal (+13.8%), Morocco (+12.5%), Algeria (+2.9%) and Nigeria (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.7 p.p.) and Senegal (+7.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dry vegetables in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +4.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.1% per year) and Nigeria (+0.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
