Egg Product Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in the African egg product market, when its value decreased by -2.7% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Egg Product Production in Africa

In value terms, egg product production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of egg products was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, egg product exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda was the key exporter of egg products in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together committing a 43% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Rwanda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the egg products exports, with a CAGR of +82.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+25.4%), Zambia (+17.9%) and Senegal (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-24.3%), Tunisia (-28.8%) and South Africa (-34.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+49 p.p.), Uganda (+21 p.p.), Tunisia (+7.7 p.p.), Zambia (+3 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-16.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-67.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X), Uganda ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 64% of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +64.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -21.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of egg products, when their volume increased by 4.6% to X tons. Overall, imports enjoyed a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, egg product imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mauritania (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the main importers of egg products, together creating 73% of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Comoros (X tons), South Sudan (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to egg product imports into Mauritania stood at +19.8%. At the same time, Senegal (+39.4%), Algeria (+35.2%), Nigeria (+28.7%), South Africa (+22.8%), Comoros (+19.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.9%), Morocco (+10.0%), Sudan (+5.9%) and South Sudan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-6.0%) and Egypt (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (+18 p.p.), South Africa (+9.4 p.p.), Nigeria (+8.9 p.p.), Algeria (+7 p.p.), Senegal (+6.4 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.5 p.p.) and Comoros (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-6 p.p.) and Egypt (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +42.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 29% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Sudan (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
