Eggplant Market Size in Africa
The African eggplant market stood at $X in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Eggplant Production in Africa
In value terms, eggplant production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 73%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Egypt (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of eggplant production, comprising approx. 62% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Algeria (X tons), sevenfold. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Egypt was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+7.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2% per year).
The average eggplant yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 9.7%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of eggplants (aubergines) were harvested in Africa; remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of eggplants (aubergines) increased by 9.1% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, eggplant exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Morocco represented the key exporter of eggplants (aubergines) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Burkina Faso (12%), Uganda (10%) and Kenya (5.4%). The following exporters - Guinea (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.6% share of total exports.
Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+43.8%), Burkina Faso (+39.3%), Uganda (+24.9%) and Egypt (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-5.9%) and Guinea (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Egypt and Senegal increased by +22, +11, +7.9, +7.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest eggplant supplying countries in Africa were Uganda ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 65% share of total exports. Burkina Faso, Kenya, Guinea and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +42.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -11.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Eggplant Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of eggplants (aubergines) were imported in Africa; declining by -38.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 517% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, eggplant imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 478% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Mauritania prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating an 8.5% share of total imports. Niger (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Mauritania increased at an average annual rate of +32.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+99.7%), Seychelles (+44.3%), South Africa (+43.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +99.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritania (+47 p.p.), South Africa (+7.1 p.p.), Niger (+3.9 p.p.) and Seychelles (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Botswana saw its share reduced by -2% and -18.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported eggplants (aubergines) in Africa, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mauritania stood at +28.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (+114.3% per year) and Seychelles (+52.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
