The African electric water heater market declined to $X in 2022, which is down by -10.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electric water heater production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of electric water heaters and immersion heaters exported in Africa fell to X units, which is down by -8.9% on the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +7.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electric water heater exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), comprising an 8.7% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to electric water heater exports from Egypt stood at +7.2%. At the same time, Tunisia (+28.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt and Tunisia increased by +5.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest electric water heater supplier in Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports.

In Egypt, electric water heater exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-0.9% per year) and Tunisia (+21.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of electric water heaters and immersion heaters in Africa dropped sharply to X units, shrinking by -20.8% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electric water heater imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Kenya (X units), Libya (X units), Morocco (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Algeria (X units) represented the key importers of electric water heaters and immersion heaters, together creating 70% of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X units), Egypt (X units), Ghana (X units), Tunisia (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +19.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Libya ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 48% of total imports. Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tunisia, Botswana and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
