There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of electrical apparatus for sound or visual signalling increased by 1.5% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, electrical signalling apparatus imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Morocco was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 38% of total imports. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by South Africa (7%). Algeria (X units), Angola (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Zambia (X units), Cabo Verde (X units), Rwanda (X units), Tunisia (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Botswana (X units) and Ghana (X units) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +17.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+22.3%), Rwanda (+14.0%), Tanzania (+9.6%), Algeria (+8.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.0%) and Zambia (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-2.4%), South Africa (-2.9%), Ghana (-8.0%), Tunisia (-10.2%) and Angola (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+29 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.3 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+2.1 p.p.), Algeria (+2 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana, South Africa, Tunisia and Angola saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -4.5%, -5.4% and -10.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest electrical signalling apparatus importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 53% of total imports. Tunisia, Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
Among the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +11.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
