In 2021, shipments abroad of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles decreased by -56% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 902%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle lighting exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,434% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - South Africa (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bicycle lighting exports from Tunisia stood at +14.4%. At the same time, Mauritius (+137.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +137.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-24.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+56 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-57 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest bicycle lighting supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports.

In Tunisia, bicycle lighting exports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-15.6% per year) and Mauritius (+86.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -25.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, bicycle lighting imports in Africa surged to X units, rising by 25% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +102.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, bicycle lighting imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented the major importers of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles in Africa, together generating 40% of total imports.
