After four years of growth, the African ECG market decreased by -6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

ECG exports contracted to X units in 2021, reducing by -8% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ECG exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 195% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Tunisia (X units), South Africa (X units) and Mauritius (X units), together accounting for 71% of total export. Egypt (X units) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (7.3%) and Morocco (4.6%). Angola (X units) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ECG supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -11.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+10.8% per year) and Egypt (-0.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -53% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+18.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of electro-cardiographs increased by 8.8% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +29.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ECG imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units), Morocco (X units), Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units), Nigeria (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Tanzania (X units), Libya (X units), Ghana (X units), Kenya (X units) and Mauritius (X units) represented roughly 83% of total imports in 2021.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 34%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +35.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
