After three years of growth, shipments abroad of electro-magnetic couplings, clutches and brakes decreased by -12.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, electro-magnetic coupling exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. Mozambique (X tons) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Congo (5.1%). Morocco (X kg) and Madagascar (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+40.0%), Mozambique (+34.8%) and Congo (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+5.5 p.p.), Congo (+3.9 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -13.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest electro-magnetic coupling supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Congo, with a 4.2% share.
In South Africa, electro-magnetic coupling exports decreased by an average annual rate of -10.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+0.6% per year) and Congo (-3.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -22.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of electro-magnetic couplings, clutches and brakes were imported in Africa; growing by 12% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, electro-magnetic coupling imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 56% of total imports in 2022. Algeria (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (4.8%). The following importers - Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - together made up 9.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +39.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest electro-magnetic coupling importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +27.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
