Envelope Market Size in Africa

The African envelope market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, envelope exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) was the major exporter of envelopes in Africa, mixing up 83% of total export. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), committing an 8.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uganda (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +59.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest envelope supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +54.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of envelopes, when their volume increased by 14% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest envelope importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Kenya ($X), together accounting for 30% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Angola, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin, Madagascar, Burkina Faso and Senegal, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +11.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
