The African internal combustion engine equipment market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 15%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Internal combustion engine equipment exports declined remarkably to X units in 2022, waning by -21.8% on 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Tunisia (X units) was the main exporter of equipment for internal combustion engines, committing 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), generating a 23% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X units) and Egypt (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to internal combustion engine equipment exports from Tunisia stood at -22.4%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+16.3%) and Egypt (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+15 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -22.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest internal combustion engine equipment supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 10% share.
In Tunisia, internal combustion engine equipment exports contracted by an average annual rate of -12.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-7.1% per year) and Egypt (+45.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -13.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+28.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Equipment For Internal Combustion Engines
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of equipment for internal combustion engines increased by 16% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of equipment for internal combustion engines, namely South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and Algeria, represented more than half of total import. Tunisia (X units) held a 5.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (4.7%). The following importers - Tanzania (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Angola (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Kenya (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 14% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 48% of total imports. Morocco, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Angola, Kenya and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 73%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
