The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -36.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+27.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+5.8 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest vulcanised rubber erases supplier in Africa, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, vulcanised rubber erases exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 60%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of erasers of vulcanised rubber decreased by -1.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber erases imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -26.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 66%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), creating a 6.1% share of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Angola (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest vulcanised rubber erases importing markets in Africa were Ghana ($X), Kenya ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Mozambique, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Togo and Angola, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +25.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
