In 2022, the African escalator market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of escalators and moving WalkWays, when their volume decreased by -82.6% to X units. Overall, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 414% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, escalator exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 243%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X units) and Angola (X units) prevails in exports structure, together generating 83% of total exports. The following exporters - Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units), Tanzania (X units), Botswana (X units), Morocco (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - together made up 15% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +36.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest escalator supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +6.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+19.1% per year) and Angola (+35.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 128% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of escalators and moving WalkWays increased by 67% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, escalator imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X units) and Egypt (X units) represented the main importers of escalators and moving WalkWays in Africa, together amounting to approx. 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Cameroon (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Mozambique (X units), together achieving a 30% share of total imports. Algeria (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +42.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
